Guard Your Heart /hart/

Updated: Mar 9, 2021

The word 'heart' is defined as the central part of something, to like something very much, love. Most of us know the heart as a hollow muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body. It is the engine of the circulatory system and its function is vital for maintaining life. Doctors say that life starts in the womb with the first recognition of a heart beat. And they note the cessation of life when there is no longer a heart beat. So, simply put we cannot have life without it.

The Bible mentions the heart of man numerous times. But as in most things, the biblical definition goes much deeper than the world's definition. The bible refers to the heart as the ruling center of the whole person. Not just the center of our physical activity but the center of our spiritual activity as well. The Bible also refers to the heart as the well or spring of all our desires. Where our will comes from. Simply put it houses our desires and it drives us.

Now that's deep. The heart is way more important than most of us know. The heart of a man can tell you everything you need to know about a person. But as humans we can be deceived because we never really know what's in someone's heart. We can hide our true motives and intentions from each other but God sees and knows it all.

Our heart is like an open book to God. We can't argue or disagree with what is found in our heart. On Judgement Day it will be clear to God. It will be as if our hearts will speak to Him for us. And we will all be judged accordingly.

That is why it is so important to guard your heart. We have to be mindful of the things we love, enjoy, seek after and like to do. Everything is not meant to be given space in our hearts. Your heart is meant to store the things that you hold dear, the things that give you worth, the thing that make you who you are. Think about it, what are you holding in your heart?

What story is your heart going to tell God about your life?

Jeremiah 29:13 13And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

(*you will not find the Lord until you put Him in your heart)

Matthew 6:21 21For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Proverbs 4:23 23Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

Proverbs 27:19 19As water reflects the face, so one's life reflects the heart.

Jeremiah 17:9-10 9The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? 10I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

1 Samuel 16:7 7But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
